Tortuga

What’s with Tortuga?

My name is Bruce Chambers.  For the past two decades my professional nickname has been “Metrodog”, the chaser of news photography at the Orange County Register newspaper and website. You can see my professional photojournalism at www.ocregister.com

However, I’ve always wanted a place to show my personal work and family photos. Next to photography my second hobby is backpacking. I’ve been hiking sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs 2,600 miles from the Mexican border to the Canada border (about 800 miles done). If you spend enough time on the trail you’ll end up with a trail name that reflects something about your trail persona. “Tortuga” is Spanish for tortoise/turtle. The name fits me because when I hike I tend to walk slow and steady, plodding along. Unlike the rabbits on the trail, I slow down to photograph and experience God’s creation.  The self-portrait, above, was taken in 2010 on a ridge above Tioga Pass in Yosemite National Park.

This website will be a place to share my personal hiking, vacation, and family photos. There are also galleries of work related photos that give you a good idea of what my daily newspaper life is like.
